Post-thermal Treatment of Oriented Strandboard (osb) Made from Cypress (cupressus Glauca Lam.)

چکیده
The objective of this research was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of oriented strandboard (OSB) using strands of Cupressus glauca Lam., before and after a thermal treatment, as well as to evaluate the susceptibility of the boards to fungi attack. Boards with nominal density of 0.70 g/cm3 were produced with 5% and 8% of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin. Physical and mechanical properties were evaluated according to ASTM D 1037 (1991) standard and compared with CSA O437.0 and ANSI A.208.1 standards. All mechanical properties were higher than those values required by both standards, except the modulus of elasticity in parallel axis. The thermal treatment slightly reduced the modulus of elasticity and stress at proportional limit, both in perpendicular axis, however improved significantly dimensional stability. Dimensional stability of the treated OSB was improved at the lower resin level but did not reach the maximum value required by the Canadian standard. Biological assay showed that heat-treated cypress OSB exposed to P. sanguineus reduced mass loss from 39% to 50%, while for G. trabeum the reduction was from 40% to 49%. Post thermal treatment of manufactured OSB (190oC, 720 s) can be the recommended method to reduce the hygroscopicity without great effect on mechanical properties and to protect panels against these fungi.

Decay and Mold Resistance of Borate Modified Oriented Strandboard
Decay and mold resistance of zinc borate (ZB) and calcium borate (CB) modified oriented strandboard (OSB) from southern mixed hardwoods and yellow pine was investigated in this study. Tests were done with brown rot, Gloeophyllum trabeum, and white-rot, Trametes versicolar, fungi for 8 and 12 weeks, respectively. Wood species and fungus type had significant influence on the decay resistance. Dec...

Oriented strandboard (OSB) is generally manufactured as a three-layer mat structure for enhanced bending performance. Virtually all OSB is manufactured to achieve performance standards, however, different manufacturers have different process techniques that result in different performance. Comparisons of the performance of commercial OSB in the current market have not been exclusively conducted...

This study evaluated the effects of a number of chemicals on the physical and mechanical properties and fire, decay, andtermite resistance of oriented strandboard (OSB) panels. Disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT), boric acid (BA), melamine phosphate (MP), and a BA/DOT mixture were sprayed onto the furnish at varying concentrations. Thepanels were tested for thickness swell, water absorption,...
متن کاملImproving dimensional stability by acetylation of discrete layers within flakeboard
Extensive research has been carried out on the thickness swell (TS) behavior of different types of wood composite panels. Of particular interest, studies investigating layer TS behavior have been carried out by Wang and Winistorfer (2003, 2001, 2000), and Xu and Winistorfer (1995a and 1995b). Results from these studies clearly indicate that the majority of TS in wood composite panels, such as m...
متن کاملUltrasonic Characterization of Horizontal Density Variations in Oriented Strandboard1
Random flake deposition in mat forming of oriented strandboard (OSB) results in inherent horizontal density variation that affects the panel strength quality. In this paper, a silicon gel coupled ultrasonic transmission (UT) was used to locate, map, and validate the horizontal density distribution in laboratory-made OSB. Two test boards were manufactured at each of three nominal density (ND) an...
